Creating a Small Business Elevator Pitch is a Networking Must

Do you need an elevator pitch? Not only yes, but heck yes. A small business elevator pitch is key to making business-to-business connections. Not to mention get information about your company to family, friends and acquaintances.

What is an Elevator Pitch?

A small business elevator pitch is a short, engaging speech you use to spark interest in your company. The elevator pitch got its name because the ideal one lasts only as long as it takes to ride an elevator.  Say 30 to 60 seconds.

Imagine a potential customer walks onto the elevator with you. You don’t have time to share all the details of what you do. But you want to grab enough interest to land a meeting later on.

But don’t just use your pitch on that prospect you’re trying to land. When someone comes up to you at a party and asks what you do, give them your small business elevator pitch. They may not need your product or service, but they might know someone who does.

It’s the definition of networking – sharing information to make contacts.

How Do You Create a Small Business Elevator Pitch?

First, figure out your objective. Are you trying to sell a new product, promote your brand, or just spread information about your company?

Next, start your speech explaining what you do. Don’t go into detail; say something like, “we help boat owners get their boats ready for winter.”

Then share your USP – Unique Selling Proposition. What do you that no one else does? Or what do you do differently that saves your clients money or time? For example, “we can create a custom app within a week. Most other app creators take more than a month.”

Next, involve your listener by asking a question. For example, “how do you train your new employees?”

Finally, put it all together. You might want to open with a joke, but remember – you want to keep your speech 30 seconds long. You don’t want to lose your listener’s interest, or hog the limelight.

And practice your speech until your comfortable and confident delivering it. Share it with family and friends, even the family dog!
